With a total of 121 kilometres of slopes and 32 ultramodern lifts, Mt Plan de Corones/Kronplatz is South Tyrol’s number one ski mountain. While it’s the ultimate destination for ski and snowboard fans from all over the world in winter, it transforms into a paradise for hikers, mountaineers, and mountain bikers in summer. Culture lovers will also find plenty to keep them happy on the summit of Mt Plan de Corones/Kronplatz at 2,275 metres above sea level thanks to the two top-notch museums: MMM Corones, one of the six Messner Mountain Museums, and the Lumen Museum of Mountain Photography.

Concordia 2000 peace bell (Mt Plan de Corones/Kronplatz)

It catches your eye as soon as you arrive at the summit of Mt Plan de Corones/Kronplatz: Concordia 2000. The peace bell was donated by the municipalities of Bruneck, Olang, and St. Vigil in Enneberg in 2003 to mark the 25-year anniversary of the ski area. It rings at 12 noon every day as well as when a country abolishes the death penalty, convicts are pardoned, or a war is ended.

This impressive museum on the summit plateau of Mt Plan de Corones/Kronplatz is dedicated to mountain photography. In a permanent exhibition spanning four floors, Lumen shows the history of mountain photography from its infancy to today. A very special museum has made its home high on Mt Plan de Corones/Kronplatz. In MMM Corones, one of the six Messner Mountain Museums, Reinhold Messner explores the 250-year contest between human and mountain. Messner, one of the world’s most famous extreme mountaineers and long considered a living legend, has intimate knowledge of the topic. The museum uses artworks and collections of extraordinary objects to tell the story of traditional alpinism at 2,275 metres above sea level. A highlight is the museum building itself, designed by world-renowned architect Zaha Hadid, which opens up unique views in all directions.

Messner Mountain Museum Ripa at Bruneck castle

Mountain heritage is the main theme at MMM Ripa in Bruneck, one of the six Messner Mountain Museums by former extreme mountaineer Reinhold Messner. The museum, which is housed in Bruneck castle and harmoniously integrated within its ancient walls, is dedicated to mountain folk from all over the world. The life of major mountain cultures from around the globe is impressively recreated thanks to numerous exhibits of everyday objects. Incidentally, the name of the museum is inspired by the Tibetan language: “ri” means mountain and “pa” means person.

Taufers castle (Sand in Taufers)

Taufers castle sits magnificently on a rocky outcropping above Sand in Taufers, standing watch over the road into Valle Aurina/Ahrntal. It’s worth visiting the castle on a guided tour, as that lets you enjoy more than 20 furnished rooms like the courtroom, library, chapel, knights’ hall, and the armoury, which is an unmissable highlight, especially for children.

Sonnenburg castle (St. Lorenzen)

On a hill above Sonnenburg, a district of St. Lorenzen, you’ll find Sonnenburg castle. Now a hotel, the former Benedictine monastery was built in the 11th century. A milestone dating back to Roman times was discovered in a field beneath the castle, which can now be seen at the Ferdinandeum Tyrolean State Museum in Innsbruck. You can admire a reconstruction of the granite stone at the discovery site.

Prettau climatic gallery

Prettau, at the very back of Valle Aurina/Ahrntal, is not only the smallest and northernmost municipality in South Tyrol, but also awaits you with a unique highlight. Here, 1,100 metres deep in the retired mine, you’ll find a climatic gallery, which is a destination for people with respiratory problems and allergies from all over the world thanks to its special microclimate and ultrapure air. The two-hour stay in the gallery is classified as speleotherapy (cave therapy) and provides relief in the case of chronic respiratory issues. The sound baths that are held in the gallery from time to time are also extraordinarily relaxing.
