MESSNER MOUNTAIN MUSEUM

Details

Reinhold Messner, the star of South Tyrolean mountaineering, explores the faceted theme of the mountain in six museums, each offering a different perspective. The themes range from mountain populations to myths and glaciers. Two of these museums are located near the Winklerhotels, namely the Messner Mountain Museum Ripa, in the castle of Brunico/Bruneck and the Messner Mountain Museum Corones on top of the Plan de Corones/Kronplatz.

SOUTH TYROL MUSEUM OF ARCHAEOLOGY

Details

Located in the historical centre of the province’s main town Bolzano/Bozen (ca. 70 km from the Winklerhotels), this museum enjoys worldwide popularity as the home of Ötzi the Iceman. Three floors are in fact dedicated to this extraordinary 5,000 year-old mummy: in addition to the original finds, the permanent exhibition also displays a life-like reconstruction of the Similaun Man. The experience is completed by a series of interactive stations that help bring the subject closer to children, as well.

SOUTH TYROLEAN FOLKORE MUSEUM

Details

In Teodone/Dietenheim, near Brunico/Bruneck there is an open-air museum dedicated to the life and folklore of the rural population of the past, from day-labourer to landlords. Museum facilities include a baroque manor and various buildings, and real animals can be seen on site along with the authentic finds on exhibition.

PRETTAU MINING MUSEUM AND CLIMATIC GALLERIES

Details

In Predoi/Prettau, a village ca. 40 km away from our hotels, there is a show mine where a real mining site used to be. A guided visit to the mine provides interesting insights into the life of miners while the adjacent climatic galleries offer recognised health benefits.

LODEN MUSEUM

Details

The Loden museum is in Vandoies/Vintl, ca. 20 km from here. The journey from sheep shearing to the finished piece of clothing is shown for the pleasure of young and old. The exhibition also focuses on the history of Loden production. Our tip: Visit the dairy show-farm next door to gain insights into the production of cheese.

MUSEUM LADIN

Details

Did you know that there are three different languages are spoken in South Tyrol? The German, Italian and Ladin language groups have been coexisting in South Tyrol for a long time. This Museum Ladin in San Martino/St. Martin in Thurn (20 km from here) is dedicated to the Ladin culture. Here you can learn all about the past and present of the Ladin-speaking valleys in the Dolomites, about the peculiarities of this region and, of course, about the development and preservation of this Romansh language.
