Monte Piana (2325 m)

Monte Piana is one of the most charming destinations in the Dolomites. It affords a spectacular 360° view of the surrounding mountains from Auronzo di Cadore, Cortina d’Ampezzo, Cadini Group, Cristallo, Rotwand, to the Drei Zinnen and Lake Misurina lying at their feet.

The WWI (1915-18) Open-air Museum affords vivid insight into the battles fought in these mountains. Visitors can see many trenches, tunnels, military positions and embrasures.

The Monte Piana plateau (2,325 m) can be reached over a road which is partially paved. However, the road is closed to cars and bicycles. The old military road whose upper part was dug out of the rock starts at Lake Misurina (1,760 m) in the town of Auronzo di Cardore (Belluno), just 12 km away from Cortina d’Ampezzo. The road is 6 km long and covers an elevation gap of 565 m. Thanks to the Shuttle Service (Jeep-Taxi) you can easily reach the Angelo Bosi refuge (2,205 m) in 12 min. There you will also find the war memorial to the soldiers killed in action on Ponte Piana.
